- Can omit the dill for a wonderful, simple white bread.
Ingredients
- 1 package dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1 cup creamed cottage cheese
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon minced onion
- 1 teaspoon dill seed
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 egg beaten
- 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1/4 cup shortening
Directions
- In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water.
- In a saucepan, heat the cottage cheese, sugar, onion, dill seed, salt, and baking soda to lukewarm. Add this mixture to dissolved yeast and beat in the egg.
- Gradually stir in flour to form a soft dough. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead until smooth, about 5 minutes. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to grease the surface. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a wamr place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until double in bulk.
- Punmch down and cover. Let the dough rest 10 minutes. Shape into a loaf and place in a greased 9 inch by 5 inch by 3 inch loaf pan. Let rise, covered, in a warm place for 1 hour or until double in bulk.
- Bake at 350 for 40 minutes. Remove bread from the pan and brush with butter. Slice with serrated knife when cool.
